Former ILM General Manager and Digital Domain Founder Scott Ross made an announcement tonight on my last post:
Today John Textor, DDMG’s Chairman and CEO, stated publicly that Digital Domain will support an International Trade Association and has pledged $100,000 to fund it.
Huge news to kick off Siggraph. Great to hear and I’m cautiously optimistic. Looking forward to hear what policies they intend to implement.
The IATSE will also be at Siggraph at booth 352. Stop by and get a VFX Soldier button. They also have a twitter account: vfxunion
Soldier On.
from hitler to jesus in 2 months…impressive!
looking forward to some more details though.
Wow world record here! “hilter” shows up 2nd word of 1st sentence in an online forum congrats man you beat them all!
So Textor’s a proponent of for-profit education, cheap-as-free labor, and the occasional ethically dubious use of patent law against potential competitors. He’s either looking for a buyer or a serious backer for a VFX facility that he led to a less-than-stellar IPO.
Now he’s up at the bar, throwing in a big tip and ordering a round for all the other facilities. That fails to convince me of his purity of motive, to put it mildly. Is he the guy the average VFX worker should want paying in to set the rules for the rest of the industry?
Trust him, I do not….
Yoda
An American sky crane just lowered a robot onto the surface of Mars and John Textor has pledged 100K towards a much needed trade union in VFX. It surely is a dawn of new ideas.
In the the spirit of new ideas and knowing Mr Textor reads these posts, and has posted himself, and admirably so, I’d like to invite him to be the first facility leader to contact the IBEW and the IATSE to begin an inquiry as to how they may enhance his employees experience and lives by also giving them a voice in their own futures. Not to mention it would be another in a a series of firsts, erasing some that have stumbled.
I know, I know, Normally employees initiate this conversation…but hey, a sky crane just lowered a robot onto the surface of mars.

+1
judge by what he does, not what he says.
like politics. its puerile to just think it will happen because someone just says it.
what a tease. that’s just enough to elevate his name in these circles and.. get nothing done.
Not every union has to be positive. And with people like him supporting it, I’ll wait and see what it will actually do before I cheer…
“… and has pledged $100,000 to fund it”…courtesy of our students!
@ Paul
student use. page 25 of the DD filings. worth reposting to for thoes who missed it.
“If we do not continue to receive governmental grant funding, primarily from the State of Florida and the Cities of West Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie, Florida, or otherwise fail to meet the target thresholds for continued grant funding, it may adversely affect our operations. ”
incentives use.
“Film production incentives and subsidies offered by foreign countries and states where we do not have operations, or our failure to continue to enjoy such incentives and subsidies offered by foreign countries and states where we do have operations, could affect our ability to secure work on visual effects and animation projects. “
@ Paul
p.27 ‘cost-effective’ is the operative word. vfx soldier studies should be part of the ‘develop awarness’ bit!
“The success of our education business depends on our ability to develop new programs in a cost-effective manner on a timely basis, develop awareness among potential students and enroll and retain students. “
wow! if he added another $5,000, it would be just enough to cover the tuition for an out of state student to DDI’s/FSU’s “pay to work” program!
color me impressed! i think some CEO deserves a big bonus for ‘his’ largess!
Now that is a good one!
Got mine
and the looks that followed.
